To Know Christ

What does it mean to know Christ?
God created us to be in relationship with Him. But something broke that relationship. The Bible says "But your iniquities have separated you from your God;" Isaiah 59:2. Before we can know God we must know ourselves.

Are you a good person?
Are you a good person? Most people would answer 'yes'.

Have you ever broken the Ten Commandments? Most would answer 'Well, I may have broken one or two, but nothing serious like murder.'

So lets take a look. You judge for yourself if you have broken any of the Commandments.

1. You shall have no other gods before me.
Is there anything more important to you than God?
2. You shall not make for yourself any graven image.
Is your God the one who revealed Himself in the Bible. If not, you have made a god of your own.
3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
Have you ever used God's holy name to express disgust?
4. Remember the Sabbath day (Sunday for Christians) to keep it holy.
What are you doing on Sundays?
5. Honor your father and your mother.
Have you always honored your parents, even in your youth?
6. You shall not murder.
Jesus said that if we get angry and hate our brother we are as guilty as if we murdered.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
Jesus said that if we look on a woman with lust we are guilty of adultery in our heart.
8. You shall not steal.
Ever taken anything that did not belong to you, even something small?
9. You shall not bear false witness (lie).
Have you ever told a lie?
10 You shall not covet.
This means we shouldn't desire anything that belongs to another person.

How many Commandments have you broken?
Who of us can say we are not guilty of breaking these Commandments? Just as with the law of our land, you don't have to break ten laws to be a lawbreaker. The Bible says For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. James 2:10

The standard is a perfect sinless God who has never done wrong. Just as any little speck of dust or blemish will show up on a pure white background, any of our law breaking will show up against God's perfect standard.

Will there be a judgement?
The Bible tells us ‘It is appointed for man to die once and after this comes judgement. Herbrews 9:27'

What will the verdict be when you are judged? Guilty or Not Guilty, Heaven or Hell. If you are like many, you think God is good and loving and will overlook your sin. But it is precisely because God is good that He can't overlook our wrongs. A good judge does not overlook the criminal acts of those who stand before him in the courtroom. He passes judgement. God is just and therefore the punishment must fit the crime. Since the description of Hell is so awful we can get an idea of what our sin must look like to a perfect sinless God.

Can I live a better life?
Strange as it may sound, the last thing that you would want to do at this point is to try to clean up your lifestyle - try to keep the Ten commandments, do good deeds, speak right things... If you realize that you have broken the Ten Commandments then you should realize that even if you do good things you are still guilty. Someone who has murdered is a murderer and can't change that. Someone who has lied is a liar. Someone who has stolen, even something small, is a thief. You may not be too bad by your own standard, but by the standards of a perfect holy God, you are guilty and deserving of death and Hell. The purpose of the Law is to show us the mirror of truth about who we are.

How can there be forgiveness?
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. Romans 5:8,9

When you were dead in your transgressions ... He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Colossians 2:13,14

We can have forgiveness because Jesus, who living a perfect life and not deserving to die, died on the cross in our place. It was not a small thing for Jesus to die for us. It was the only thing that could meet the demands of the Law. He paid the penalty for our sin, a penalty that we could pay only by our own death and separation from God. Because of His death we can be declared righteous and have peace with God.

What does it mean to know Him?
Paul says in Philippians 3:8-10 "I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;"

Jesus said in John 16:33 says These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.

Hebrew 6:;17-19 says "In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast..,"

From these and other verses it is evident that the value of knowing Christ is not that we would have a life free of trouble; rather they speak of tribulation and suffering. But in that suffering we have forgiveness of our sin, a relationship with Christ, the Creator God of the universe, and a satisfying anchor for our soul.

O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! Psalm 34:8
